We can all be Destination Climate Champions

Scary but true: we are less than 4 years away from 2030 and emissions still haven’t peaked yet. That begs the question how on earth can we stay on the Paris pathway to halve emissions in the near term to then reach net zero by 2050?

It’s time to take a good look at transport in terms of climate action priorities. It is by far the biggest emitter in travel and tourism - especially at the destination level with a 72% share on average. Long haul island destinations will have a much higher percentage than say landlocked nations that benefit from integrated transport systems across borders.

Immediate steps include accelerated decarbonisation eg switching to EVs, use of public transport, car and bike sharing and innovative solutions such as increased choice of no fly or slow options. Great example of Copenhagen visitors being incentivised for arriving by train with hotel discounts. Loving the ambition.

Just as well there is a free online Destination Climate Champions training to take advantage of from the Travel Foundation - and I can highly recommend it! It’s exactly what is needed to push the needle on climate action, equity and inclusion starting at the DMO level with tons of practical tips and case studies. Loved how engaging and inspiring the climate champions are.
